East Bay F1 kicked off the 2026 Formula 1 season with a bang. With an incredible turnout, we got to enjoy watching the LIVE Australian Grand Prix surrounded by F1 fans for a fun-filled late night. What you missed or maybe want to reminisce—a race recap.
The Australian Grand Prix, the opening race of the season, put drivers and their newly designed cars to the test. The current regulations shook up the grid and proved that things within Formula 1 are truly changing.
Unfortunately, on the way to starting grid, Oscar Piastri crashed into a wall, leaving him unable to compete in his home race.
With a hectic race start, multiple drivers tried to fight their way to P1 using their own unique techniques. Charles Leclerc with Ferrari quickly climbed 3 positions, making his way to P1 at the start. Leclerc, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton became the top 3 in lap 1.
In the early laps, Russell and Leclerc engaged in an intense battle for P1, continuously switching between 1st and 2nd. New strategies were being executed, and drivers had to be aware of how best to use their car to its maximum potential. They needed to be wary of signals such as the red flashing lights on the back of the cars, which indicate a car is not at maximum power, and use those details to their advantage.
As the race continues, we see multiple drivers forced to retire due to issues with their cars. After an impressive start for Isack Hadjar, his race came to an end in lap 11 due to a power unit failure. Another retirement was seen in lap 19 for Valtteri Bottas in Cadillac.
In the final laps, Kimi Antonelli makes an excellent recovery after encountering battery issues and pushes to P2! The Mercedes team proved themselves one to watch for the 2026 season after Russell took home the win and Antonelli secured P2. Ferrari is just behind them with Leclerc taking P3 and Hamilton following in P4. Things have definitely changed since last year, when McLaren was dominating on the track. 2026 seems to be the year for the teams that figure out how to use the car to their advantage to shine.
In a post-race interview with the drivers, most everyone had something to say about needing to work on their approach and figuring out the car further as the season continues in China this weekend. Russell states it was a difficult start for Mercedes, being challenged by Ferrari’s defensive maneuvers, but “maybe these new rigs aren’t as bad as everyone’s making them out to be.”
Leclerc says he felt “slow” and needed to work on some things. Lando Norris states that it is a “difficult thing to understand and maximize, but we learn through the race.” The consensus being that there is more to understand and learn, especially when it comes to elements like battery power, but drivers are proud of the effort being put in by all.
Even with pre-season testing, drivers and teams are still experimenting and continuing to learn how best to utilize their cars. It will be interesting to see how the drivers advance with each race. Tune in to the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix this Sunday, March 15, with East Bay F1 at Griffin Motorwerke in Berkeley! More details here.
